Google Ads for Local Service Businesses: Lessons From a 750% Conversion Increase

How we rebuilt an appliance repair company’s Google Ads around calls and bookings, and the lessons any local service business can use.

Google Ads dashboard with a rising conversions chart, map pins and local service technicians

Appliance Recovery repairs every major appliance brand across Arlington, Fort Worth and the wider Dallas–Fort Worth area. Like most local service businesses, it lives on same-day phone calls. When we took over its Google Ads, the account was spending money but nobody could say how many jobs it produced.

After the rebuild, conversions from Google Ads increased by 750%. Here is what we changed, and what any local service business can learn from it.

Lesson 1: Track calls and bookings before you change anything

The old account counted clicks and page views. Those numbers looked fine and meant nothing. The first job was to track what actually makes money: phone calls from the ads, calls from the website after an ad click, booking forms and quote requests.

Until conversions are tracked properly, every decision about bids, keywords or budget is a guess.

Lesson 2: Split campaigns by service and area

One campaign for “appliance repair” mixed refrigerators, washers and ovens, and cities near and far. We rebuilt it into tight groups by appliance and by area, each with its own ads. That made the ads more relevant, lowered costs and showed which services were most profitable.

Lesson 3: Cut the searches that never become customers

The search terms report showed money going to people looking for parts, manuals, DIY videos and jobs. Adding those as negative keywords stopped the waste immediately. We review search terms every week.

Lesson 4: Send each ad to a page that matches it

An ad for refrigerator repair should land on a refrigerator repair page with the phone number at the top, not on the homepage. Matching pages convert more of the same clicks.

Lesson 5: Bid for the hours when you can answer the phone

A missed call from a paid click is wasted money. We adjusted the schedule to the hours the office could answer and booked jobs, and pushed budget to the times that produced the most calls.

Lesson 6: Let the data set the budget

Once the cost per call and per booked job were known, budget decisions became simple. Spend more where the cost per job is profitable, less where it is not.

What this means for your business

Most local service accounts we audit have the same problems: no real conversion tracking, broad campaigns, no negative keywords and ads pointing at the homepage. Fixing those four things usually improves results long before any increase in budget.
